And it STARTED...

The First OFFICIAL EARTH DAY was April 1970.

Only 2 years later, in November 1972 citizens in Henry County and some surrounding counties joined together to incorporate non-profit SAVE OUR LAND. Around 1970 Louisville Standiford Field and Bowman Air Field were feeling cramped. A new airport was planned and initially Henry County was the targeted sight.  Our land owners saw the potential threat for this development to fundamentally change our peaceful, agri-based, communities. We were about to be drowned in high decibel jet engines, commuter traffic, passenger traffic, decline in air quality, devastation of wildlife and many more adverse outcomes. Surrounding counties wouldn’t escape the loud impact night and day either. So these citizens banded together and successfully defeated plans to build a major airport in Henry County.

The founders kept this non-profit organization afterwards to address possible future issues that might need some activists to step up as stewards of the land. The initial event was the biggest and most significant, but there were some smaller problematic issues afterward; a race track had been proposed and some other incompatible development schemes were floated but never came to fruition.

SAVE OUR LAND wasn’t meant solely as a device to help fend off undesirable development. To the contrary, in our Articles of Incorporation our mission statement is much larger, including conservation, education, promoting social welfare for the common good and more.

Over the years officers aged out, members moved away, and many forgot about SAVE OUR LAND, but it still exists as a viable entity today, available to meet potential new needs or challenges. Some of the residents of Henry County today weren’t born when SAVE OUR LAND was created, some of us weren’t yet residents; thus SAVE OUR LAND is unknown to many people here now.

As rapidly as the technological world around us changes and growth and development advances, there are bound to be proposals that come along that may potentially conflict with or disrupt our ideals of conscientious expansion, whether they involve industry, commerce or technology that might impact our residents, farmers or local businesses. We would want to become educated about the pros and cons to competently consider the implications: should we oppose a proposal or support it, do we need to investigate or hire legal advice, should we make stipulations to our planning and zoning board? And that's the role SAVE OUR LAND was originally created to play.

SAVE OUR LAND has as much purpose as ever; we need new members and new officers, and we need citizens to get involved. We will want to be ready. It’s 2024 and time we are prepared and understand trends heading straight at us. That means networking, educating ourselves, understanding our resources, organizing for our collective best interests.

Ready to participate in a planet, neighborhood friendly group, Henry County?
